My Secret Life

When I was young, I wanted to be an artist.

I drew this of myself when I was 17.  I held a mirror up to my face.

This is my husband before he was my husband.  He loves to fish.  It helps me to paint when I am angry at him.

This is Rosa, my younger son's girlfriend.  Painted when she had just graduated from high school.

We all have something about us that most do not know about.

He also loves to watch baseball.  That is where he is right now, in fact.  Spring training in Arizona.

I love to hike and this is of a photo of me taken by my best friend.

I didn't have the kind of parents that understood the value of being an artist so they encouraged me to make art my hobby and to focus on my typing skills or how to keep my knees together while sitting.

The hills around my home are like my friends.

Don't get me wrong, now, I had great parenting, just no artists in the family and therefor no positive reinforcement for my passion.

Rocky and Boomer.
In my secret life, I am an artist.  Mostly I paint with acrylics and I almost always paint people; especially ones I know.

A fantasy phase I went through when I was 18.
I just started this painting of Kirby.  I have painted her before.  She and my oldest son had a three and a half year relationship.  It helps me to paint when I am feeling sad about something.

What is your secret life?  What is it you love to do, but aren't recognized for it?

I am curious...

  1. Gorgeous art, Debra. I didn't realize you had such a wide of array of styles and techniques in your paintings and sketches. I really like the blonde girl with the kitty and the kitty in the flowers - so whimsical and colorful.

I have no secret talents or secret life...if I had talent like yours I would be bragging all over the place! No mystery over here :)!

  2. I am blown away by your work! I especially love the one of the hills behind your home...so unusual and creative...though I like all your art. Have you framed and hung these?

I don't think I have a secret life; I have pretty much put it out there for all to see -whether it be paintings, singing, dancing or acting. That doesn't mean I'm any good :) I just hang it out for anyone to critique. One of my favorite stories is a post-play performance comment from a "friend": "Mmmm, great costume." Ugh, thanks?

  3. A, thank you. It was you who inspired me to write about my art. I got a few responses via facebook who said they liked the blonde girl, too. Maybe I should think about that style again!

Janice, Thank you, too! The hills have always reminded me of the human form. Don't you just love those kind of comments!? I would almost prefer, "Your performance was not up to its usual standards." At least you know where you stand with them!! I have another show this week, but may get a few weeks break. I think it is time for us to have a lunch date! My treat! I'll give you a shout via email when I know for sure.

  4. Those are seriously good paintings. I am very, very impressed. You need to be selling those. I like your folk art the best.

As for my secret life? It's so secret that if I told you what it was I'd have to kill you. And really - I like you way to much for that... ;-)

  6. Debra,

You are a very talented artist! I especially love the one you drew of yourself at 17. I used to be a pretty good artist in high school but sort of lost touch with it. :(

  7. Linda,
I don't why but I think you should take it up again. I took an art class at a local Junior College a few years ago and it got me juiced up again. I think our best years are only just beginning! xoxo
